Heroes in full color

Thanks to everyone's sage feedback, I've decided to update all of the Hero Cards and Monsters to full color.  I will also maintain the existing B&W versions of the Hero Cards and Hero stand-ups for the folks who want to color in their heroes!

The first step in this process is to color all of the Heroes.

Which is a lot:

Here's a sneak peek at what a colored Hero Card looks like:

More on this as I make progress.

Reign of the Dragon adventure!

Folks, it's been a long time coming, but I've finally finished the latest Hero Kids adventure: Reign of the Dragon.

This is by far the largest Hero Kids adventure yet, weighing in at a whopping 57 pages of encounters, maps and monsters.

This premium adventure takes the kids on a journey to rescue the dragon Algoxarth. Can the kids slip past the cultists who have surrounded Rivenshore? And can they rescue Algoxarth and her dragon egg from the Dragon Prince, or will he succeed in his fiendish plan?

• Premium adventure with 11 encounters
• Includes monsters; cultists, dragon, dragon hatchling, dragon prince
• Includes two playable heroes; dragon hatchling and dragon warrior
• Comes with 13 new modular map tiles and more variations

The kids certainly had a blast helping out with this adventure.  They both chose a core hero and a pet for this one.  Violet chose the female warrior (Ayla) and the fox (Bliss).  Dash chose the warlock (Warlock) and the wolf (Wolfy).

But it's quite long, so I recommend splitting it up across at least two sessions.

Adventures in Bayhaven - Pets Expansion

Brian Benoit has released a new Hero Kids-compatible pets expansion for his Bayhaven mini-setting.  The expansion features 11 new pets:

•  The Giant Riding Beetle has no attack, but its thick carapace makes it a powerful ally. (This pet card comes in two versions: Ladybug [aka Ladybird] and Rhino Beetle)
•  The Giant Komodo Dragon’s powerful bite can make enemies weaker
•  The Magic Butterfly can summon a whole swarm of butterflies with razor sharp wings.
•  The Wolpertinger is a strange and terrifying animal that most people have never seen.
•  The Chamrosh is a cross between a dog and an eagle – and it can make a leaping flyby attack.
•  The Raiju is a small animal that has electrical powers – it has a shocking attack, and it can move around with lightning speed.
•  The Stag is a regal animal, but you don’t want to be on the wrong side of his antlers when he makes his charge attack.
•  The Monkey is a clever and useful ally both in and out of combat.
•  The Porcupine uses its sharp quills to both attack and defend itself. It can even shoot them!
•  The Chameleon is virtually invisible when it’s sneaking around.
•  The Gromp has the ability to shake the earth and knock enemies over with its powerful stomp. (This creature was first seen in the Bayhaven adventure “The Ringmaster’s Request.”)

Hero Kids Updates Live...

Previous Hero Kids purchasers should by now have received an email about the updates to almost all of the game's PDFs which are available from DriveThruRPG.

Here's the changelog:

•  Updated all hero and monster cards with filled artwork and for consistency in special actions and bonus abilities
•  Improved Ability Test examples in core rules
•  Updated Glossary in core rules
•  Updated Skills section in core rules to add dark vision
•  Added rules for Equipment and Items to core rules

•  Added printing authorization to core rules and expansion PDFs
•  Changed definition of Engaged to include 'targeted by an attack or with another adjacent enemy'
•  Updated artwork for giant rat and king rat in Basement O' Rats and core rules

This has been a pretty major piece of work to update all of the artwork and PDF files, so errors could well have slipped through. Don't hesitate to let me know if you see anything that needs to be fixed.

If you didn't get the email, you can get the updated PDFs by logging in to DriveThruRPG and downloading all of the updates through the My Library page.

Can you name them all?

Working on Pets...

I'm currently working on pets to include with the new set of heroes, and they're raised some questions and quandaries!   Simply put, pets can work like extra heroes (with all of the usual actions and abilities) or they can work as an extension of the hero that they 'belong' to.

Here's an example pet that would be an extension of the hero it belongs to:

The reason for the difference between pets with full sets of actions and those that are extensions of their heroes is to do with the 'action economy'.   If the heroes of some players have pets and others don't have pets, then the players whose heroes do have pets will have much more stuff (more actions) they can do on their turn than the other players.   This will make the other players sad.   Which makes me sad.

However, if solo kids are playing with pets, then they would probably prefer to have a full set of actions for both their heroes and their pets...

Dilemma.
